A day in the life of an Amazon adventurer: 5:20am – 9am

Gentle whispers seep into my dreams and rouse me just enough to call out “Good morning” in response to the knock on my door. It’s the polite signal from our guides to abandon my slumber, lap up a tiny bowl of tapioca porridge and quietly file into the canoes ready for a blissful pre-dawn foray along the mirror-perfect still waters of the Rio Negro deep in the Amazon rainforest. Despite the early hour (5:20am doesn’t exist for me in my normal life), I feel rejuvenated and alive.

To start from the beginning of the adventure: 5:20am – 9am

My days have settled into a soothing rhythm of adventure, delicious food and lazy heat-induced dozing repeated four times daily. Satiated after breakfast, there is time for a quick nap before the jungle trek.

The night canoe trips are the treasured diamonds of this expedition. While Phil and I thoroughly enjoy the daytime activities, it is after dark that the hidden wonders of the jungle reveal themselves.
